They can be bought from players or vendors, looted or obtained as rewards, or made using crafting materials. Alongside providing attribute bonuses Upgrade items also have cosmetic effects.
Infusions, inscriptions and enhancements are types of upgrade components. They aren't generally available for general use and can only be applied to Ascended equipment or other weapons from the Factions campaign. Infusions, inscriptions and enrichments can be extracted from equipment using an Infusion Extraction Device or saved using a Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.
Like other upgrade products Phoenix Boxes are able to be traded even while still connected to the item they are upgrading, and they can be reused after being salvaged. These upgrade items can be used to boost the quality of armor and weapons without spending Dilithium. They can increase the chance that the item will receive a high-quality upgrade.
A component that is upgraded in an item may be replaced by another but it is not able to replace the previous one (except for upgrades of legendaries and equipment that has been ascended). Upgrade components can only be added to upgraded items that have an identification level of zero or greater. When you upgrade a weapon that is already equipped with a prefix or suffix upgrade will display the name of the upgraded item as it appears in game (for instance, adding a Radiant Insignia to Canthan Armor will cause it to be referred to as Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). A player can only have up to three upgrade items at once.
Glyphs
Glyphs are a fantastic accessory to any item. They provide unique benefits and boosts. Certain glyphs can increase the number of affixes attached to an item, thereby increasing its overall power. These glyphs can be found through dungeons, and some even be found in specific World Tier 3 areas. It is important to note that glyphs can only be used by characters who have created a root-dungeon with the same level of depth.
To make use of a Glyph you must first create it using components and then connect them via anchors. The component will then automatically align itself to other components or paths in the same layer. If you don't wish to create the glyph using components, you can build it by using a combination of paths and anchors. Drag an element in the direction of a component highlighted to hold it into its place.
Some glyphs have conditions to fulfill, for example having a minimum of 25 Dexterity in a specific area on the Paragon Board. Certain glyphs require a particular number of Primary Stat Nodes to be activated, which could be a challenge to attain. Some glyphs have a radius, which increases as you level it up.
Glyphs are available for many different items, and are added to all weapons except for weapons belonging to specific classes. Some of these glyphs have additional conditions, such as an amount of Dexterity damage, or Attack damage on a specific portion of the Paragon board.
The Defend Glyph boosts the chance of preventing enemy attacks by 5%. It also has an opportunity of 15%, making the Hero vulnerable for two turns.

Some glyphs may also be applied to restricted tools, such as the Black Lion Chest and Trading Post. These glyphs are counted towards the Combat Mechanic Achievement.
The most common glyphs in the game are the attack glyphs that increase Artifacts' ATK substats by a fixed value. These glyphs are especially useful for classes that employ weapons with a range, such as Warriors or Rogues. Other glyphs include the Exploit Glyph which makes enemies who strike the Hero vulnerable to being damaged.
